Synopsis

The general objective of this study was to determine the level of sustainable tourism utilization of Tulum National Park through the application of a multicriteria method to manage access for visitors and bicycles in areas of intensive tourist use, particularly those related to the archaeological site and beaches. As preliminary results, the study established the tourism carrying capacity and level of service for cyclists, identified indicators of acceptable change limits for intensive use areas, and designed strategies to promote conservation. The findings will be useful in providing economic certainty to jobs and businesses linked to this Protected Natural Area (PNA), as well as in preventing or mitigating negative impacts on ecosystems, considering the likely increase in visitation following the inauguration of the Maya Train.
